150 volunteers from all over Ukraine helped with us to fight the drying up of the Narcissus Valley

May 6, 2023

We sincerely thank each and every one of the 150 volunteers from all over Ukraine who helped fight the drying up of the Daffodil Valley with us yesterday.
Volunteers from the Chysto.de eco-family under the guidance of scientists from the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve and experts from the Danube-Carpathian Program cleaned the wet meadows after cutting down the bushes on an area of about 20 hectares, made three dams on the melioration channels, and also prepared dozens of ties from pre-cut branches, which will also be used for the construction of zagat.

The event was held within the framework of the project “Danube-Carpathian Program” “Save the Narcissus Valley” with the financial support of EOCA European Outdoor Conservation Association and the tourist equipment manufacturer ORTOVOX and with the support of The German Marshall Fund.
These works are designed to hold back as much water as possible during the wet season to support narrow-leaved narcissus meadows during the dry season. This will help to restore the water regime of the most valuable areas of the Valley, and therefore to preserve unique groups dominated by narrow-leaved narcissus and about 20 other plant species of the Red Book of Ukraine, which also grow in this area and require a high level of moisture.
“Wedges made of willow branches and glazed soil ensure the raising of the water level in temporary melioration channels. There is a huge problem with the hydrological regime in Narcissus Valley. We are constantly working to ensure that the water table rises and provide the Daffodil Valley with life-giving moisture. This is especially important in light of global climate shifts. And the fences arranged during the campaign are simple and economically cheap to implement and surprisingly effective in retaining moisture on the territory of the Narcissus Valley,” says the head of the ecological monitoring laboratory, candidate of sciences, senior researcher Petro Paparyga.

“We have such experience in saving the Vilshansky Reservoir, where everything is done on a volunteer initiative, and we believe that the power of Ukrainian unity is very powerful and leads to positive changes for the better,” says the founder and co-organizer of CHYSTO.DE eco-family events Lena Zhuk.
A huge number of nature conservation areas of Ukraine are currently destroyed – as a result of hostilities or occupation. “Involvement of broad volunteer circles in nature protection helps spread environmental education and contributes to the democratization of our society. Nature protection is becoming closer to people, accordingly, it is also partially under their protection, in addition to the protection of the state. Defending our ecological rights to a clean environment is part of the defense of our freedom and our country,” says the head of the NGO Danube-Carpathian Program, Candidate of Science in Science. Bohdan Prots.
