The attitude of Ukrainian society to Christmas trees constantly has been changing over the last 50 years. In Soviet times, it considered prestigious to put a luxurious Christmas tree out of the woods. For the last 20 years, artificial Christmas trees have become an important attribute of New Year’s marketing. Climate change is forcing us to reconsider our life habits.
In the last ten years before Christmas, a real “battle” has erupted between forestries selling live Christmas trees and manufacturers of artificial Christmas trees made of plastic materials. Both use “environmental arguments” – allegedly their products are more environmentally friendly. So which one to choose? Let’s compare the main environmental factors: the carbon footprint, the overall environmental impact of production and transportation, and the impact on biodiversity.
