DСP experts are working to establish the new protected areas in the Upper Dnister river forests

February 24, 2020

“Danube-Carpathian Programme” has begun work to provide a conservation status of “virgin forests monument of nature” unique stretch of forests on the Dniester steep hill area located within the Zhydachiv County.

Our experts have discovered the unique survived stands of natural forests within Zhydachiv County of Lviv Province. It is part of the once widespread oak and beech forests of the Upper Dniester. The complex terrain conditions (the forest is located on steep hills along the Dniester) and special status (riparian forests) have helped to protect this forest with old-growth oaks, beeches, lime trees and rich wildlife.

The total square footage located in the Khodorivske and Zhuravske Forestry Units of Stryiske State Forestry Enterprise is about 110 hectares.

Now the “Danube-Carpathian Programme” together with the Lviv Regional Administration on Forest and Hunting Economy, is working on the preparation of documentation for the establishment of the “virgin forests monument of nature”. The provision of such status is provided by article 39 of the Forest Code of Ukraine. It will keep the forest in a natural state, increasing its water capacities (in the forest, in particular, is located interesting water features streams and waterfalls; in addition, it protects the riverbank of the Dnister river), will increase the tourist attractiveness of the area.

In 2020, we will continue the survey of the area to preserve the old-growth and natural forest stands.

If:

  • you are aware of some old-growth and natural forests, which got no protection status;
  • you consider that a certain forest can claim the protected area status;
  • old-growth and natural forest stands are threatened or there being felling,

please, inform us by the phone 067 66 33 672 or email avpavelko.eko@gmail.com.

Our team will work to protect these forests as a part of the natural heritage of Ukraine.
