ENI CBC HUSKROUA/1702 “Open borders for the wildlife of the Carpathians”

February 21, 2020

Project title:

“The implementation of technical solutions to ensure the integrity of ecological corridors by planting certain types of trees (forest habitats restoration) within selected critical areas of the Ukrainian Carpathians (pilot project). It is implemented within the frame of the project ENI CBC HUSKROUA/1702 “Open borders for the wildlife of the Carpathians”

With the support of:

Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine ENI CBC Programme

The duration of the project:

2020-2021

Background:

The loss of habitat, its fragmentation and degradation contribute to the risk of loss of populations of large carnivores (wolf, bear, lynx) in the Carpathian region of Ukraine. Most of the time of residence large predators migrate, using ecological corridors – corridors, ensuring safety, food and shelter during migration and rest. The mosaic fragments of the landscape are most favourable for the passage of these animals. Often, however, the landscape is dominated by or entirely dense forest or felling large areas or large areas of open meadows, which is not best for migration. For the successful passage of the exposed areas should be small mosaic habitat fragments, in which the species of large carnivores in the event of danger can quickly and discreetly hide or flee and/or find the food.

Tasks:

To support that the mosaic landscape fragments which are favourable for the passage of animals are necessary for the following pilot activities:

1) development of the plan of measures to ensure the integrity of selected ecological corridors by planting certain types of trees (forest habitats) within certain critical areas of migration corridors;

2) maintenance to clean areas of pastures/valleys of undesirable vegetation, selection and procurement of required quantity of planting material, conducting tree planting (for areas with a total area of not less than 5 hectares), as well as monitoring the results of this work.

3) the experience needs to be generalized in developed a comprehensive document (manual) with the proposed management measures and conservation of transboundary ecological corridors and large carnivores in the region.
