Saving “Chorne Bahno”: How Ukraine’s First Peat Bog in the Carpathians Was Restored

Chorne Bahno — the first peatland in the Ukrainian Carpathians to undergo restoration, with work beginning in 2012, over 13 years ago. At the time, no one in Ukraine had undertaken anything like it. It was an ambitious project driven by people passionate about nature. Thirteen years later, we brought together two of those who were there at the very beginning of the restoration: Dr. Bohdan Prots, who led the project, and Yevhen Hiha, who was the lead engineer then and is now the director of the Enchanted Land National Nature Park. This is how they remember that work.
