The Carpathian Biosphere Reserve is under threat of destruction due to debts
August 21, 2024VIDEO: Should we pay for the mushrooms and berries we pick?

I want to have arguments to prove to the local authorities the value of our reserve and improve cooperation between communities and our institution for environmental conservation. – Yaroslav Petrashchuk, Director of the Nature Reserve “Gorgany”.
When I talk to local residents and they ask: “What do I benefit from the fact that there is a landscape park here?”, I answer: “You are the happy owner of a plot of land bordering the park. And this means that the value of your land is 10-15% more expensive”. This changes people’s attitudes. – Andriy Zhyla, Head of the RLP “Stilske Horbohirya”.
We receive a significant part of natural benefits for free, that is, a person does not pay for their receipt. Some services can be monetized – that is, evaluated in monetary terms. The more we study nature, the more we understand the enormous benefits that people receive. This benefit can be material, but also intangible. – Doctor of Sciences, researcher Nataliya Stryamets.
Unfortunately, we still have to explain the importance of the benefits of nature and its preservation – to the authorities, the community, business. And in this discussion it is important to focus on the right arguments. For example, calculate how much what we receive from nature really costs. What is the cost of clean water, air, silence, birds singing? Currently, the model of service dynamics is mostly focused on the consumption of these services by humans, and not on the restoration of nature. Nature is gradually being depleted. – Head of the Danube-Carpathian Programme Ph.D. Bohdan Prots.
The training seminar: “Benefits of nature and ecosystem services in protected areas” (October 8-9, 2024) was held by the NGO “Danube-Carpathian Program” within the framework of the project “Benefits of nature: from theory to practice” with the support of Erasmus+ in cooperation with the “Roztochchya” Program and in partnership with: Natuurpunt Beheer (Netherlands), STICHTING WAGENINGEN RESEARCH (Netherlands), EUROSITE (Netherlands), Stichting IVN (Netherlands), Vereniging Natuurmonumenten ((Netherlands), Geonatura d.o.o. za strucne poslove zastite prirode (Croatia), Stichting voor Duurzame ontwikkeling (Netherlands), DOGA KORUMA MERKEZI VAKFI (Turkey), Natuurpunt CVN (Belgium).
