Appeal regarding the protection of the Borzhava valley from the construction of a wind farm there.

November 28, 2023

Already, preparatory work has begun on the Borzhava valley – laying a dirt road for the construction of the wind farm – which has led to the destruction of significant fragments of high-altitude grass and soil cover and caused surface erosion processes.

The project plans to arrange foundations with a diameter of up to 18 meters and a depth of 4 meters for 34 wind turbines, access roads, underground power lines and a substation.

Further implementation of the project will lead to much larger-scale destruction and consequences, such as degradation and loss of habitats for rare species of animals and plants. The construction of the wind farm will require the use of heavy machinery and excavators, which will be used to build foundation pits. Due to a significant number of days with adverse weather conditions, there will be an additional impact and risk of increased erosion processes.

The areas occupied by wind turbines (WTUs) occupy a relatively small area, but the import of large-sized spare parts, the placement of construction equipment and the temporary storage of construction materials cause the involvement of much larger areas in the process of construction of WTUs than the areas under the WTUs themselves. This leads to damage to the previously intact landscape on much larger volumes of natural areas. For the construction of WTUs in the mountains, it is necessary to build special roads for the import of integral parts of the WTUs.

The full text of the appeal regarding the protection of the Borzhava meadow from the construction of a wind power plant to the President of Ukraine, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine can be viewed at the link:
