How cheese from a traditional farm supports the wild nature of the Carpathians

September 14, 2023
If you buy polony cheese, you support the wild nature of the Carpathians. Currently, more than 100 rare plant species are under threat of extinction within the Ukrainian Carpathians.
Their populations are decreasing as a result of the reduction of grassland communities.
The Carpathian meadows, with their various flowers and herbs, were formed over thousands of years thanks to grazing and mowing.
In recent decades, everything has changed.
Due to the decline of traditional animal husbandry, the entire layer of Carpathian traditions and the Carpathian meadows with their herbs and flowers were threatened with extinction.
Both the forest and the meadow are essential in a specific mosaic relationship. The absence of sheep and cattle breeding leads to the disappearance of both post-forest fields and meadows (in the upper part of the forest).
In those places where traditional agriculture was practiced, there were large interspersions of meadows within the forest massifs. They are gradually drawn into the forest and disappear.
These complexes require more attention from people, business development, and support for traditional farming in the Ukrainian Carpathians.
Of course, more than buying cheese alone will be needed. But this can be one of the steps towards change.
