Background:

The meandering Latorica river flows from Ukraine into Slovakia. It forms a unique landscape of oxbow lakes, soft and hardwood floodplain forests, grasslands, and meadows. This is an important migration corridor and breeding habitat for rare and threatened bird species, and also a significant number of indigenous fish species.  Despite a patchwork of protected area designations, the landscape and biodiversity are threatened by climate change and decreasing water availability. Through a combination of reconnecting and seasonal rewetting of floodplains, as well as active transboundary management, the project envisions a restored wetland landscape. That landscape extends up to 38,000 ha and will support abundant biodiversity, flood and drought protection, whilst also providing sustainable livelihoods from nature friendly land management. Stakeholders from both countries will be brought together to share knowledge and understanding to co-develop a framework for the restoration of the landscape.

Project objectives:

Within the duration of the project, it is expected to deliver the following results:
1. Gathering and analysing most recent biodiversity data on both sides of the border plus recent trends;

2.  Gathering and analysing most recent biodiversity data on both sides of the border plus recent trends;

3. Workshop with ecologists to compare outcomes of the management analyses and develop a joint approach;

4. Analysing water management system and canals to identify obsolete and/or harmful ones for biodiversity;

5. Collecting and analysing water quality data of the Latorica river;

6. Identification of potential areas and approaches for hydrological restoration;

7. Cadastre analysis to gain insight in the ownership situation;

8. Analyses of the recent history , population dynamics and socio-economic situation;

9. Analyses of relevant governmental policies and plans for the region;

10. Analyses of the climate change impacts on the discharge volumes of the Latorica based on a number of climate scenarios;

11. Establishing a Transboundary Steering Committee for the Latorica restoration;

12. Elaboration of a Vision and Framework Landscape Restoration Programme;

13. Stakeholder mapping and organizing meetings with community representatives, farmers, and interested parties to share/co-develop knowledge to develop the vision and the Framework Restoration Programme.
