It is unfortunate, but some residents of the Carpathians are still guided by the rule: “water will take away”
How can this be changed? There should be a set of measures:
- starting from punishment for pollution of water bodies
- to active educational activities – both with youth and with the adult population.
- And also a civilized system of waste management, which the authorities should take care of, and which they should demand from their community representatives.
- Campaigns to clean up river banks are an important part of eco-education. In addition, this is a way to support and restore the river system. A cleaned river is able to fully fulfill its biological and social functions – to maintain the water balance in nature and provide biodiversity and people with water.
The NGO “Danube-Carpathian Program”, together with the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve , held a joint large-scale clean-up, during which they cleaned a section of the bank of the Tysa River within the city of Rakhiv, which is known for the pollution of river ecosystems in the Carpathians, and also carried out measures to improve local sources. Especially for this, within the framework of the Open Rivers Programme project: “Demolition of river dams of the Tysa catchment area and restoration of floodplains for especially valuable territories”, we purchased battery saws, pruners, garden shears, protective covering and other equipment, which were transferred to the reserve before the clean-up and will serve to maintain the proper condition of the tourist routes of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve.
We thank everyone who joined the clean-up, and we believe that over time the banks of the Carpathian rivers and streams will become cleaner.
