Background:

The grant from CAF will be used for wetland studies in the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve (Ukraine) to establish the Ramsar Sites (Wetlands of International Importance) and ensure protection and sustainable use of most valuable wetland ecosystems of the Prypiat river catchment. The study is planned on birds, mammals, invertebrates, water regime and socio-economic situation. Preparation of applications on wetlands Ramsar status for the Ukrainian government and Ramsar Convention Secretariat and actual map on Prypiat wetland areas. The number of meetings will be arranged with different stakeholders, like  Ministry of ecology, Chrornobyl Industrial Areas, local communities. The received data will be incorporated into the new management plan of the Biosphere Reserve. The planned studies are based on the cooperation of our organization with the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth (UK) and the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve (Ukraine) for the areas of former Chornobyl nuclear disaster.

Tasks:

  • Wetlands studies of the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve (Ukraine) to establish the Ramsar Sites (Wetlands of International Importance); 
  • Stakeholders cooperation to support the process on Ramsar Sites establishment;
  • Prepare the necessary documentation for national and international recognition of the Ramsar sites
